THE BIG SWAP! PEOPLE URGED TO MAKE
THE SWITCH FOR FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2010
Northampton Fairtrade group is asking people to swap everyday shopping basket items such as tea, coffee, chocolate, cotton t-shirts, pineapples, bananas, cakes, sugar and a host of other products for Fairtrade ones during Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 (22 February - 7 March), which has the theme of The Big Swap.
John Clarke from the Northampton Fairtrade group said: ‘We want everyone in Northampton to get busy swapping for Fairtrade. Swap your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual cotton socks for Fairtrade cotton socks and your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa. Each swap will help show that people in Northampton want producers in the developing world to get a fairer deal.
‘Fairtrade guarantees producer organisations a fair and stable price for their products that covers their costs and enables them to support their families and invest in a better future. Although Fairtrade products are much more widely available these days, buying them is still not yet the norm for everyone. So, for Fairtrade Fortnight 2010, let’s get swapping.’
They are also asking people to log their swaps online during Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 at www.bigswap.org.uk as the Fairtrade Foundation will be totting up product swaps on a special online swap-o-meter. The aim is to get people in Britain to make one million and one swaps over the two-week period and change the lives of millions of farmers around the world.
Fairtrade Fortnight is the annual nationwide campaign to promote awareness of Fairtrade and encourage people to buy products, which carry the FAIRTRADE Mark in order to help farmers in developing countries.
Northampton fairtrade group are having one event at Weston Favell Centre Wednesday 24th between 11am to 3pm where you can discover a few of the many fairtrade products that can be purchased.
Northampton has been a fairtrade town for a number of years and if you want to find out more about fairtrade and where you can buy fairtrade products from please visit www.fairtradenorthampton.org.uk
Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation adds: ‘Just imagine - you could be the person who makes the one hundredth, the one thousandth, or even the final swap which takes us past the million mark. Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 will show how our little actions add up to a lot and help to change lives.’
